A palace visit needs its own morning
Topkapi is close to Hagia Sophia, but the visit is much longer. Give the courtyards and collections a substantial block of time, decide on the Harem before buying, and treat a hosted-entry appointment as a fixed part of your day.

Choose the ticket by what it includes
The palace’s own combined ticket and the online audio option below are different products. The word “combo” can mean a combination of palace sections or a package of separate Istanbul attractions.

Only visiting Topkapi?
The standalone IWC ticket starts at €56.91. It lists hosted entry, a 15-minute English introduction and a 10-language smartphone audio guide. Harem entry is excluded.

From Hagia Sophia, the Imperial Gate, or Bâb-ı Hümâyun, leads into Topkapi’s First Courtyard. Farther inside, the twin-towered Gate of Salutation, or Bâbüsselâm, leads towards the Second Courtyard. National Palaces explains this sequence.
- Save the booking instructions first. Check the meeting point, appointment and contact details while you have a reliable connection.
- Allow a walking buffer. We would leave about 15–20 minutes from the Hagia Sophia area to locate the palace approach and meeting point, plus the supplier’s requested early-arrival time. This is an allowance, not a measured walking route.
- Use the supplier’s meeting point. With an IWC hosted-entry ticket, show your confirmation to the designated host. Do not substitute the gate shown in a photo for the meeting location in your email.
- Keep time for security. Hosted entry addresses the ticket queue; the required screening still applies.

Decide whether the Harem matters to your visit
The Harem was the palace’s private residential area. It is a separate decision from seeing the courtyards, state rooms and collections. If it is one of your main reasons for visiting, confirm access before choosing a ticket, and leave additional time instead of squeezing it in just before departure.
For a first visit with a full morning available, we would prioritise the spaces that interest you most and take a break between sections. With only two hours, a smaller selection is more realistic than trying to see every gallery and the Harem.

Lunch before another paid sight
Return towards Sultanahmet for a break. Hagia Sophia is a natural next visit, but keeping Basilica Cistern for the following morning gives the day more breathing room.
Hours, comfort and booking checks
National Palaces lists Tuesday as the weekly closure and ticket-office hours of 09:00–17:00. These are ticket-office hours, not a promise of entry to every room until 17:00. Check the official page again for holiday or temporary changes.
The site covers outdoor courtyards as well as indoor collections. Wear comfortable shoes, plan for the weather, and leave room for rest stops. If steps, uneven surfaces or long walking distances affect your visit, contact the venue about your specific route before booking; this guide does not certify an accessible route.
The reviewed IWC standalone ticket lists cancellation up to 24 hours before arrival; the Old City and Saver combos list 48 hours. Check the final conditions and arrive as instructed. Download the audio before setting off and bring your own headphones.

Questions before you go
Does the online Topkapi ticket include the Harem?
The Istanbul Welcome Card standalone audio ticket, Old City Combo and Saver Combo reviewed here explicitly exclude the Harem. The National Palaces combined venue ticket includes the palace, Harem and Hagia Irene. Compare the exact product before buying.
Can I enter directly with my online confirmation?
For the Istanbul Welcome Card Topkapi offers in this guide, meet the host as instructed in your confirmation. A confirmation email is not a promise of independent turnstile access.
Is Topkapi Palace closed on Tuesdays?
Yes. National Palaces lists Tuesday as the weekly closure. Choose another day and recheck any holiday arrangements.
Is the entry host a live guide for my entire visit?
No. The standalone audio ticket lists a short English orientation followed by independent exploration with a smartphone audio guide. A full guided tour is a different product.
How long should I allow for the palace and Harem?
Our planning allowance is about 2½–3½ hours for the palace, with roughly 45–60 minutes more if you add the Harem. Add arrival and security time, and allow longer if you want to study the collections closely.
