Closing time is not a last-entry guarantee. The timetable above does not establish the latest permitted admission. If you want to arrive near the end of a session, ask the venue or your provider for that day’s entry deadline before purchasing.
Choose a time around your own schedule
- Starting your sightseeing day: consider a morning session, then leave the rest of the day flexible. Treat this as a scheduling choice, not a promise of shorter queues.
- After another attraction: allow for its exit, walking and the cistern’s admission process. Avoid two bookings with no buffer between them.
- On an evening out: choose Night Shift only after checking your dinner, transport and ticket arrangements.
We do not have live queue measurements. Weekends, groups and special events can change waiting times, so a precise “quietest hour” would be misleading.
Night Shift: how to decide
Night Shift is a separately priced evening session. Compare its tariff with daytime admission on the Basilica Cistern price guide. Do not assume that a standard ticket, tour or combo includes it.
Choose daytime if you want to keep the evening free or group the cistern with other Sultanahmet stops. Choose Night Shift if an evening visit fits your plans and you accept the price difference. Ask about the specific event listing before expecting a concert, performance or other programme: an evening admission label alone does not establish what is included.
How long to allow
Our planning allowance is 30–60 minutes inside, plus entry waiting and travel. Reserve extra time if you like to stop for photographs, listen to commentary or read about the Medusa heads. This estimate is not an official visit limit.
For a fixed booking later in the day, work backwards from when you must leave. Keep the entry buffer separate from the time inside; a short visit can still be delayed by admission.
After Hagia Sophia: a flexible two-stop plan
- Complete the Hagia Sophia visitor route before committing to an immediate cistern entry time.
- Make your way towards Yerebatan Caddesi and the signed Basilica Cistern entrance. For planning, reserve 10–15 minutes between attractions to orient yourself and reach the correct entrance; this is a buffer, not a measured walking time.
- Check which cistern session your arrival falls in. If you would arrive in the gap between sessions, choose a different time or deliberately plan for evening admission.
- If you are also visiting the Blue Mosque, use the prayer-aware same-day route before fixing all three stops.

Questions before you book
Is Basilica Cistern open every day?
The operator publishes daily hours of 09:00–22:00. Admission is divided into daytime and Night Shift sessions; this is not a continuous-entry promise.
Can I arrive at 19:00 with a daytime ticket?
Do not plan on it. The published daytime window ends at 18:30 and Night Shift begins at 19:30. Confirm the session before buying.
Does closing at 22:00 mean I can enter at 21:59?
No. A closing time does not establish a last-admission time. Check the venue or provider’s entry deadline and leave enough time to visit.
How much time should I allow inside?
For planning, allow about 30–60 minutes inside, plus admission waiting and walking time. This is an estimate, not a fixed tour duration.
